Facebook and other social media sites have become a popular preying ground for online scammers and recently, there has been a sudden surge in the number of incidents of crimes perpetrated on social media. Acknowledging this trend, the government has launched a hotline to deal specifically with social media related complaints.
By dialling 01766678888, victims can now inform the authorities about their ordeal and receive legal advice as well as assistance. And most importantly, the hotline will be accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak commented that this move was done to prevent social media abuse as well as online crime. He added that currently, a new Facebook profile is opened every 12 seconds in Bangladesh, of which many are fake. Some miscreants are using these accounts to conduct criminal activities while there are those who are becoming victims of cyber bullying. The helpline has been launched to assist these victims.
He also informed that there are plans to set up a digital forensic lab, and that the Chinese government has assured to help in this regard.
